ting excursion, awakening an evil force.I think the premise of the story has a lot of potential. There were some intriguing elements that I wish had been explored further. I think the pacing was very good. The broad strokes of the main characters are generally solid, though I have more to say on this topic below.This really wasn’t the novel for me. There were a couple of gaps where I think the story could have been enhanced. I didn’t find the twists to be surprising. The viewpoint does change, with several characters being featured, and I found these to be very jarring transitions that didn’t add anything to the story for me.The biggest weakness, for me, was in the characters. While, as stated, their broad strokes were solid and intriguing, I didn’t find that they were well fleshed-out. I think there are a lot of missed opportunities to add depth not only to the characters, but in their relationships with one another. I was very put off by the racial epithets and misogyny espoused by the characters. (I can definitely get onboard with unlikeable and heinous characters – but only if they’re compelling and well-developed).I can’t be sure if some of the more quirky use of language was deliberate on the part of the author (if so, I didn’t find it successful), or if it was an oversight in the editing process. (The author sent an updated copy, and this is the version I read).I received an ARC via the author.
